Appointments are available with our providers with flexibility in scheduling, including evening clinic hours.

What to Expect in Individual Counseling

If you are coming to counseling for the first time, let us tell you a little bit about what to expect. The first session of counseling is called an intake appointment. This session is primarily so you and your counselor can get to know each other. The counselor will ask you what you want to work on, what your symptoms are, how long you may have had your symptoms and what things you are looking for in counseling. The counselor will ask questions about your history, work, school, relationships, and the like, to get a better understanding of what your life is like outside of the sessions. Sessions are typically 50 minutes long and scheduled on a weekly basis. Each counselor keeps their own schedule, so you can schedule directly with your therapist or the front desk is always available as well!

Cannot Do Weekly Sessions?

If weekly sessions are not what you are looking for, feel free to talk to your counselor about other options available. During the session, feel free to ask the counselor any questions you may have about the process, your counselor’s professional background, or expectations moving forward.

Couples Counseling

American Indian Health Services of Chicago, Inc. offers couples counseling on an outpatient basis. Couples seek counseling for a variety of reasons and sessions are tailored to meet each couple’s unique needs. Couples counseling is often sought to strengthen the relationship and improve communication. Some issues that couples counseling can assist with include communication skills, conflict resolution, intimacy issues, infidelity, parenting issues, remarriage and much more. In couples counseling, a counselor will work with the individuals on goals set forth by the couple as well as providing a safe, non-judgmental space to explore whatever concerns the couple may have. The counselor will guide the couple in exploring the obstacles they face as well as educating and supporting the couple.

Clinician-Led Community Group Sessions

American Indian Health Services of Chicago, Inc. offers a variety of group sessions led by peers and licensed clinicians. Each group offers its own curriculum or goals to meet the needs of group participants. Group therapy is a safe space to process emotions, learn new skills and connect with others facing similar challenges. AIHSC is always looking to increase services based on the community’s needs. If you have an idea of a group you would be interested in, please call a Behavioral Health staff member at 773-883-9100 to learn more about this process.
