Hear Her Voice
The Hear Her campaign highlights the voices of American Indian women who have faced complications during or after pregnancy, sharing their experiences and the importance of timely care. By amplifying these stories, the campaign underscores the significance of women’s health and the integration of traditional practices with modern care to improve maternal outcomes.
Watch the video and remember why your health as a Native woman is sacred.
Women's Health
The American Indian Health Service of Chicago (AIHSC) offers pap smears and annual women’s health exams which are crucial for early detection of cervical cancer and other reproductive health issues, ensuring timely intervention and better outcomes. The Indian Health Service (IHS) provides additional valuable resources to support women in accessing these exams and maintaining overall reproductive health, with information available on their website.
BreastFeeding
Breastfeeding is a vital traditional practice in Native communities, and efforts are being made to strengthen it to improve the health of women, babies, and families. Despite its importance, Native mothers face some of the lowest exclusive breastfeeding rates, and addressing this could help combat health challenges like obesity and diabetes.
Pregnancy
The American Indian Health Service of Chicago (AIHSC) provides a range of maternal health care in our clinic. IHS offers additional resources to support pregnant individuals, focusing on key aspects like pregnancy monitoring, guidance on milestone, understanding medication, postpartum care, and substance use. Refer to these resources to ensure the well-being of both mothers and babies through culturally sensitive, accessible care.
Breast Cancer
Breast cancer affects Native American women at higher rates, with statistics showing they are 7% more likely to develop the disease and 10% more likely to die from it than non-Hispanic white women, often being diagnosed before age 50. The American Indian Health Service of Chicago (AIHSC) offers breast exams during regular annual check-ups and provides referrals for mammograms, helping to detect breast cancer early and improve outcomes for Native women.
Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer disproportionately affects Native communities, and timely screenings—such as Pap smear tests—are essential for early detection, helping to reduce the risk of advanced disease and improve outcomes. Screenings and referral for treatment are available at The American Indian Health Service of Chicago (AIHSC).
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common and can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or parasites, often without noticeable symptoms, making regular testing crucial for maintaining health. The American Indian Health Service of Chicago (AIHSC) offers STI testing, including screenings for syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis C, using a comprehensive approach to treat and prevent these infections and ensure the well-being of Native communities.
